Neo Tokyo consists of 2,018 Identities and 2,500 Vault Cards. Its design draws inspiration from the 1987 anime Neo Tokyo and is set in a dystopian world. However, the NFTs are unique, they aren’t images but strings of code tied to multiple aspects that provide players with various powers within the Neo Tokyo universe.

The founders claimed it was “the fairest NFT drop in history,” with no pre-sales, free mints, and minimal personal holdings. Alex Becker and Elliotrades only hold one NFT each.

In October 2021, Alex Becker and Elliotrades introduced the Neo Tokyo NFT collection, but they didn’t take the usual route seen in most NFT projects. Instead, Neo Tokyo was wrapped in secrecy. To mint the first Neo Tokyo Identities NFTs, people had to solve puzzles and riddles. Even now, joining their Discord isn’t a straightforward process.

This element of mystery, or perhaps because of it, has made Neo Tokyo wildly popular. What started as free-to-mint NFTs has grown into a project with a devoted following. After the Identities, the collection expanded with Vault Cards, Item Caches, and Land Deeds, creating a fully-fledged ecosystem.

The Inner Workings of Neo Tokyo

The Neo Tokyo ecosystem revolves around four key components: Identities, Vault Cards, Item Caches, and Land Deeds.

Identities

The Identities represent characters in Neo Tokyo, either male or female, with different classes, abilities, and appearances. There are 33 classes, ranging from Drivers and Bartenders to Officers and Builders. Each Identity’s attributes vary, with rarity determined by text color.

Vault Cards

Vault Cards act like virtual bank accounts within Neo Tokyo. They include credit ratings, wealth, and supply items. The vaults also hold BYTES, Neo Tokyo’s native token, which plays a key role in the ecosystem.

Item Caches

Item Caches contain collectibles like clothing, weapons, vehicles, and helmets that enhance characters.

Land Deeds

Land Deeds represent virtual real estate within Neo Tokyo. Players who held Identities, Vault Cards, and Item Caches could claim Land Deeds for free, completing the set needed to become full citizens.

Becoming a Neo Tokyo Citizen

The first phase of the project focused on Neo Tokyo Identities. Players earned Vault attributes by playing a mini-game called Kong Klimb. Another mini-game determined the rarity of their Item Caches.

Once players collected Identities, Vault Cards, Item Caches, and Land Deeds, they could upload their codes to claim a Neo Tokyo S1 Citizen. Unlike Identities, which were strings of code, Citizens are full characters with detailed artwork. Today, these Citizens hold significant value and can be found on OpenSea.

Outer Citizens and Season Two

Season Two introduced Outer Citizens. As with the first season, participants had to burn BYTES tokens to mint Outer Identities. The more BYTES burned, the rarer the Identity. This season also features Land, Vaults, and Items, similar to Season One, and rarity depends on Meta Tournament rankings.

Gaming guilds and teams were introduced in February, allowing NFT holders to participate in Meta Tournaments on Twitch for in-game rewards.

How to Join Neo Tokyo

In the beginning, getting into Neo Tokyo wasn’t easy. Initially, users had to solve riddles, win games, or pass quizzes to secure a spot on the whitelist. On “Upload Day,” only those on the whitelist could mint Identities, and even then, they had to pass additional tests.

For Vault Cards, a contract link was shared, giving Identity holders two hours to mint. If they missed the deadline, others on the whitelist could claim the vaults instead.

Now, if you want to join Neo Tokyo you can buy on OpenSea the S1 or S2 Citizen NFT.

The Vision Behind Neo Tokyo

Alex Becker and Elliotrades aimed to create a project that rewarded long-term participation. The project emphasizes community engagement and active involvement, encouraging holders to decode announcements and interact with the ecosystem.

In Becker’s words: “Read the code. Know the code. You are your code, but you will be many codes. Those who learn the code will have advantages beyond imagination when they assume full digital form.”

Neo Tokyo’s blend of exclusivity, community focus, and builders citadel has cemented its status as a standout project in the Web3 space. It’s not just an NFT collection, it’s a unique world that continues to evolve with its dedicated community.
