On April 9, AMD officially announced its new Ryzen 8000HX series, codenamed Dragon Range Refresh. Designed for high-performance laptops, the lineup includes four powerful CPUs, with the flagship model—Ryzen 9 8945HX—boasting 16 Zen 4 cores and a boost clock of up to 5.4 GHz.
The series features:
- Ryzen 9 8945HX: 16 cores, 32 threads, 5.4 GHz boost, 80MB cache
- Ryzen 9 8940HX: 16 cores, 32 threads, 5.3 GHz boost, 80MB cache
- Ryzen 7 8840HX: 12 cores, 24 threads, 5.1 GHz boost, 76MB cache
- Ryzen 7 8745HX: 8 cores, 16 threads, 5.1 GHz boost, 40MB cache
All models include Radeon 610M graphics and configurable TDPs ranging from 45W to 75W, depending on the SKU. These chips aim to deliver desktop-level performance in laptops, particularly for gaming and other demanding tasks.
While the CPUs are expected to roll out in gaming laptops soon, supply chain complications and potential U.S. tariffs could affect launch timelines. Companies like Raze and Framework have already paused some preorders in response to trade uncertainties involving Chinese components.
