Sony has filed a new patent for a PlayStation controller with built-in solar panels, allowing it to charge through exposure to light. The patent, titled “Operation Device,” was submitted on March 6, 2025, and details a design incorporating photovoltaic elements into the controller’s housing. These solar panels would capture light and store the energy in an internal battery, providing a continuous charge when exposed to a light source.
Rather than relying solely on solar power, the technology appears to be aimed at extending battery life, particularly in standby mode, without requiring an external power source. This could reduce the need for frequent charging and enhance overall convenience for gamers.
Sony’s existing DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers have already introduced major advancements, such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, elevating the gaming experience. A solar-powered controller could be another step toward greater efficiency and sustainability in gaming hardware.
While Sony has not officially announced plans to release a solar-powered controller, this patent suggests the company is exploring new ways to improve battery life and reduce reliance on traditional charging methods.
