OpenAI and Broadcom have announced a multi-year strategic collaboration to design and deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators. The partnership will combine OpenAI’s chip design expertise with Broadcom’s networking and semiconductor technologies to power the next generation of AI infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Broadcom will produce and deploy racks of OpenAI-designed accelerators and Ethernet-based network systems, with installations starting in the second half of 2026 and completing by 2029. The systems will be used across OpenAI’s facilities and partner data centers worldwide, addressing the growing demand for large-scale AI compute power.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the collaboration marks a critical step toward building the infrastructure needed to advance artificial intelligence. “Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI,” Altman noted.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan described the effort as a “pivotal moment” in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence, emphasizing that the combination of custom accelerators and Ethernet connectivity will deliver scalable, power-efficient systems optimized for AI workloads.
